America West Airlines
America West Airlines was founded in 1981, operating a diverse fleet of Boeing and Airbus aircraft until 2007. Headquartered in Tempe, AZ, America West used Phoenix Sky-Harbor as its primary hub while using Las Vegas and Columbus as its secondary hubs. Since 2005, America West had already planned to rebrand themselves under the recently bankrupt US Airways, having bought out the crippled airline’s assets and bases. They would further operate with the unique callsign “Cactus” but retain US Airways branding until 2015, when they again bought out American Airlines and created the largest airline in the world for its time.
Based on limited information available within the trading card community, we know these cards date back to 1997. A set of 8 trading cards printed on a large perforated sheet can be found intact or detached into individual cards, with the former option fetching a higher demand from collectors. Except for the Airbus A320 and Boeing B737 in classic America West colors, the remaining cards feature the company’s workhorse B757-200 in special liveries commemorating its hub states and Arizona-based sports teams.
